Safe to say that T.J. Ward's a sure tackler: Browns Insider

Cleveland.com by Jodie Valade

BEREA, Ohio -- Under normal circumstances, T.J. Ward takes pride in his tackling ability. He likes to make sure he hits opponents hard, and that he brings them to the ground with force.

The art of tackling is something he believes in passionately.

Under the circumstances of this season — he’s playing with a broken right thumb that was surgically repaired before the New York Giants game a month ago — tackling is even more of a priority for the Browns safety. It’s something he must focus on even more, to ensure that his technique is right and true.

Ward adds toughness to defense

ClevelandBrowns.com by Matt Florjancic

When defensive back T.J. Ward was selected by the Cleveland Browns in the second round of the 2010 NFL Draft out of the University of Oregon, he talked about former Oakland Raider Jack Tatum and Pro Football Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott as his football heroes.

Lott and Tatum were known for their hard hits and tough-minded style of play during their careers and over this first three years in a Browns uniform, Ward has developed his own tough, aggressive style.

“T.J., you have a lot of admiration for his toughness,” Browns defensive coordinator Dick Jauron said.

Cleveland Browns' T.J. Ward never saw Tatum-era Raiders play, but identifies with hard-hitting style

Cleveland.com by Tom Reed

BEREA, Ohio — Browns safety T.J. Ward wasn't alive when the late Jack Tatum roamed the Oakland Raiders' secondary and made whatever stadium he patrolled that Sunday the most dangerous swath of turf in the NFL.

Growing up in the Bay Area, the dynastic San Francisco 49ers were Ward's team and safety Ronnie Lott was his man. But Tatum was the idol of his influential father, Terrell, a former college safety who taught his oldest son the importance of driving his hips through a ball carrier.

A copy of Tatum's autobiography, "They Call Me Assassin," sat on Ward's living-room table, and his menacing image was a...

Ward, Haden distribute turkeys

ClevelandBrowns.com by Matt Florjancic

Strong safety T.J. Ward and cornerback Joe Haden have teamed up to help the Cleveland Browns’ secondary since they were selected in the first two rounds of the 2010 NFL Draft. On Tuesday morning, they again teamed up, but this time, it was to fight hunger in the city of Cleveland.

Ward and Haden joined with local radio personality, Mark “Munch” Bishop, and helped donate and carve more than 250 turkeys to those in need at the St. Augustine’s Church and Hunger Center. It marked the second straight year in which Ward and Haden have worked with the St. Augustine’s Church and Hunger Center.

“It means a lot for...

Browns Notebook: SS T.J. Ward showing versatility

CBSSports.com by Marty Gitlin

When the Browns picked strong safety T.J. Ward in the second round of the 2010 draft, it was a foregone conclusion he would help their run defense. He was an accomplished tackler coming out of the University of Oregon.
That promise has been realized. The hard-hitting Ward is among the most dependable tacklers at his position in the league. Pro Football Focus ranks him as the third-surest tackler this season of all NFL safeties.
But Ward has also emerged in coverage while defending tight ends. A good example was last Sunday when he blanked Chargers stud Antonio Gates to key a 7-6 Browns victory. Gates...

About TJ

At 5-10”,  211 pounds, TJ's hard-hitting, and aggressive playing style has earned him the nickname “Boss Ward.”

Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, TJ was the 38th overall NFL draft pick in 2010. He led the Browns with 123 tackles in his first pro season, helping solidify his candidacy for Defensive Rookie of the Year. TJ was the first rookie to start a season opener since 1988, and the first Cleveland Browns’ rookie to intercept more than one pass in a game since 2001. As an excellent cover safety who also loves to blitz, TJ returns to the Browns as an integral part of Cleveland’s secondary in 2011.

TJ’s career in football began at prep powerhouse De La Salle High School, where he played a key role in the School’s 1992 – 2004 national record-setting 151 game winning streak. Despite a senior year injury that deterred many college scouts, TJ walked on at the University of Oregon. Red shirted in 2005, TJ earned a position as a two-year starter for the Ducks by the time his college career closed in 2009.
